Distal biceps repair
This entails reattachment of the biceps tendon to the radius bone. In chronic tears, advanced reconstruction options may be necessary and the post op protocol delayed.
1-14 days: Keep splint clean and dry. Ice through the splint three times daily. No NSAIDs.
2-6 weeks: Convert to hinged elbow brace 30-90 degree ROM. Continue ice. No lifting.
6-10 weeks: Open hinged elbow brace to full motion. Work on obtaining full ROM of the elbow. May take NSAIDS if necessary.
10-16 weeks: Discontinue hinged elbow brace. May initiate gentle elbow flexion activities.
4-6 months: Slowly increase elbow flexion and supination strength. May start biceps curls and lat pull downs in this phase.
6 + months: May return to lifting as tolerated in a controlled manner.
