Elbow Arthritis
The major difference with this form of arthritis is stiffness caused by outgrowth of osteophytes (bone spurs). This can be managed nonoperatively with NSAIDs and injections. Open and arthroscopic debridements can improve ROM but has the chance of increasing pain. Elbow replacement is an option but reserved for older, inactive patients.

Advanced rheumatoid arthritis affecting the elbow is fortunately less common with the advent of biologic agents. This can be managed without surgery as long as pain is manageable. This is the most common reason for total elbow arthroplasty.
